Learn to Swim
OUR PROGRAMS & LEVELS
Our learn to swim lesson plans are designed around well balanced progressions with
water safety and survival emphasised in early levels with formal stroking introduced in the higher levels.
Lesson duration: 30 minutes
4 : 1 student/teacher ratio in lower levels
6:1 student/teacher ratio in higher levels ( level 6)
Two lessons per week are recommended with practice in between.
SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED IN EACH LEVEL ARE LISTED BELOW:
LEVEL 1 STARFISH:
Submerge with assistance if required; crocodile crawl along ledge; kick and paddle on a noodle independently;
teddy bear, teddy bear turn around independently; back float and flip, flip and return to ledge assisted;
floppy onto a flotation aid; seated safe water entry,monkey, monkey and exit independently.
LEVEL 2 JELLYFISH:
Recover an object from chest deep water; star float independently; torpedo independently for 2 metres; humpty
dumpty independently; back float with a flotation aid independently; paddle two metres to a flotation aid and
return tothe pool edge; polar bear for two metres and recover for a breathe with assistance.
LEVEL 3 TURTLE:
Superman kick on a board with sound technique; flip,flip swim from front to back with assisted sculling on back for a minimum of 6 seconds; execute lateral side breathing; kick soundly on the back for 6 metres using a flotation aid; execute freestyle arms with kicking using a sound technique for 3 metres.
LEVEL 4 CROCODILE:
Surface dive And swim underwater and recover an object from chest deep water; flip,flip swim with scull on the back for 5 metres independently; execute freestyle arms and breathing to the left side with assistance; swim backstroke for 5 metres assisted on a board; exeute freestyle arms and breathing to the rght side for 5 metres independently.
LEVEL 5 STINGRAYS:
Perform a seated dive entry into a streamlined position and swim for 2 arm strokes; perform a throw rescue with the use of a flotation aid; swim backstroke for 5 metres; swim bilateral freestyle for 5 metres independently; demonstrate a basic understanding of breaststroke; scull, float or tread water for 1 minute.
LEVEL 6 DOLPHIN:
Perform a dive entry with streamlining and swim with no breathing for 4 arm strokes; perform a wade rescue; perform a forwards somersault from the freestyle swimming position; swim backstroke for a minimum of 20 metres; swim bilateral freestyle for a minimum distance of 20 metres; demonstrate a basic understanding of breaststroke; scull, float or tread water for 3 minutes waving intermittently for help.
